The Philippines’ lone boxing contender Mark Anthony Barriga was defeated by Kazakhstan’s Birzhan Zhakypov in the Round of 16 at the London 2012 Olympics. The Pinoy boxer was leading (10-8) coming into round three but the 2-points awarded to the the Kazakh after Barriga was cited for headbutting rang the death knell for our country’s Olympic dreams.
In a post match interview with AKTV’s Lia Cruz, Barriga said sorry for his loss and if not for the penalty he could have won the match and moved to the quarterfinal round.
We are still proud of you Mark Barriga. You fought a good fight. Go Team Philippines.
